Cinder is trying to break out of prison–even though if she succeeds, she’ll be the Commonwealth’s most wanted fugitive. Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit’s grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn’t know about her grandmother or the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother’s whereabouts, she is loath to trust this stranger, but is inexplicably drawn to him, and he to her.

Absolutely brilliant – I read Cinder and was amazed, now I’ve read Scarlet and am even more immersed into that world, I adore it with a passion, unexpectedly so I have to say. What I thought might be an enjoyable read, another fairytale twist in the tale, has become an absolute obsession. I’m holding on by my fingernails not to pick up Cress right now because I know that the next book in the series is a while away yet…

So in this instalment the focus shifts somewhat to Scarlet, who is desperately searching for her Grandmother. Teaming up with streetfighter Wolf, whom she is unsure that she can fully trust, she embarks on a quest to find and save Grandma, and a terrifically addictive new adventure begins. At the same time Cinder attempts escape from prison, getting entangled with the wisecracking Thorne in the process – and these two different partnerships are set on a collision course of pure reading joy.

I just love this writing – an intelligent, flowing and absorbing adventure that brings emotion, thrills, spills and an imaginative and unique twist on some oft told tales. A brilliantly drawn “other” world and great depth to the characters makes for an absolutely enthralling yarn  that you just will not want to stop reading…it is one of those books where you are just DYING for things to happen. For Scarlet and Cinder to join forces, for Scarlet to find her Grandmother, for Wolf to fight his inner urges, the list is endless and those pages will practically turn themselves as Marissa Meyer leads you through that strange and wonderful place with a wry eye and a definite flair for the dramatic.

As with Cinder and leading into Scarlet, again the set up for the next book in the series, Cress, is pitch perfect. Moving the story forwards, as we learn more about the Lunars and the evil plans of Queen Levana (oh I DO love to hate that woman) and watch Cinder trying to come to terms with all she has discovered, whilst at the same time meeting and falling for Scarlet and co, I don’t think I have read such a perfect “Book 2″ in a series for a long time. This in no way suffers from second book syndrome and to my mind is head and shoulders above the sheer magic that was “Cinder” so to say I am excited for “Cress” would be putting it mildly. I will hang on in there though…possibly.

A fantastic read. Absolutely sparkling. A little slice of reading heaven. Nothing else to be said…
